South Africa has had a bumpy path lately. Our government is not doing too much to inspire us, and with the rand having gone to junk status, we are all looking around going “what next, where to from here?” But if you take your chin out of the news and look around you, there are some enlightening stories like the story of Gatebook and SNIPR that will give you faith in our South African humanity.
Automatic Numberplate Recognition at work
Last Thursday a vehicle was stolen off the streets of Johannesburg. By Friday morning the vehicle had been identified by one of SNIPR’s cameras in the Baccleuch area in Johannesburg.
The SNIPR system uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology that identifies the number plate on a vehicle and flags it against the SAPS database of suspicious vehicles. Together with security companies and the SAPS, the vehicle was tracked down and two arrests were made.
Creating Safe Zones
Various neighbourhoods, shopping centres and business parks in the Gauteng and KZN regions have had SNIPR technology installed and are working with their local armed patrol units as well as the SAPS in their local regions to effectively block criminals from entering their areas, thus creating safe zones to live, work and operate.
